Job Description
Job Summary:
The Controller reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer and serves as a key financial partner across the organization. In this Controller position, oversight includes the Accounting team with responsibility for Accounts Payable and Payroll, while working closely with operational leaders, department managers, and external consultants and auditors. The Controller collaborates across finance, revenue cycle, and executive leadership to keep information accurate, timely, and useful. The Controller is responsible for overseeing monthly and annual close processes, ensuring compliance with GASB, Medicare, Medicaid, and regulatory requirements while maintaining strong internal controls. On the administrative side, the Controller partners with the CFO on budgeting, audits, pro formas, and analytical reporting that supports business development and operational decisions. This Hospital Controller role also includes mentoring and developing staff, strengthening processes, and supporting leaders with clear financial insights that actually help them run their departments better.
Job Relationships:

Occupational Hazards:
Works in the general hospital setting. May be exposed to blood, body fluids, or tissues as well as patients in varying stages of infectious states.
Samples of Duties:

- Coordinates monthly accounting close including scheduling and integration of sub-ledger data into general ledger timely, accurately and completely.
- Maintains and enhances accounting process controls including monthly journal entry listings, monthly account reconciliations, daily cash reconciliations, weekly cash forecasts, monthly financial variance analysis vs prior actuals and budget.
- Assists with the annual operating and capital budgeting process.
- Reviews and verifies AR valuation.
- Oversees unclaimed property process and annual physical inventory count.
- Reviews and signs off on monthly account reconciliations and journal entries.
- Coordinates and supports all financial external and government agency audits.
- Audits organizational internal controls and provides annual internal audit assessment.
- Verifies biweekly payroll accuracy and approves quarterly 941 reports and annual State compensation reports.
- Manages the Accounts Payable and Patient/Payor refund processes and coordinates with Purchasing issues with vendors and their invoices.
- Understands the tracking of statistics for HCAI, CMS and Medi-Cal and works to maintain the statistics required for those reporting obligations. Maintains knowledge and ability to run reports in the systems of NIHD in or to verify the statistics used by NIHD and maintains records as needed as support of all statistics.
- Manages the accounting, accounts payable, and payroll staff so to ensure timely and accurate financial and statistical reporting.
- Serves as a point of contact for Inyo County in regards to tax payments, tax receipts and bond obligations
- Serves as the primary contact for the annual audit and as the primary support person for the preparation of annual government filings including Medicare and Medi-Cal cost reports.
- Performs performance reviews of the Accounting staff in consultation with the CFO.
- Accepts other duties as required by position and requested by Chief Executive Officer or Chief Financial Officer.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:

- NIHD safety policies and procedures, including the Rainbow Chart, Employee Health, and Infection Prevention standards;

- Accounts payable processing including 1099 filings
- Payroll processes and filings
- Month end close cycle including journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations

Skills/Abilities to:
- Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with NIHD staff and the public;
- Establish and maintain professional working relationships with NIHD staff at all levels as well as the public;
- Develop and maintain a high degree of maturity, integrity, and good judgement.
- Supervise accounting, payroll, and accounts payable staff
- Set and meet deadlines for the accounting, payroll, and accounts payable team
- Create and review monthly journal entries
- Create and review monthly reconciliations
- Pull and compile reports for annual filings such as cost report
Minimum Qualifications:
Experience:
4+ years of experience in Healthcare accounting.
2+ years in management supervising position
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
Certification:

Experience:
2+ years in a hospital accounting position
5+ years in management
Education:
Masters Degree in Business, Finance, or Accounting
Certification:
Professional certification of one of the following: CPA, CFA, CMA, CFM, CIA, ACCA
