About the job

Company Overview

Companion was formed in January of 2020 with a commitment to providing unmatched care to pets and unsurpassed support to veterinary teams through the management and operation of our acquired veterinary hospitals. We are based in Los Angeles, with a focus on expansion throughout the Western United States. The Companion team is passionate about the animal health industry and deeply committed to building a network of best-in-class veterinary practices with talented people collaborating to solve industry-wide problems and deliver exceptional medical care. We are seeking individuals who share our energy, drive and ambition and who will meaningfully contribute to our growth and success.

About This Role

The Director / Senior Director of FP&A is a strategic financial leader and right-hand advisor to executive leadership. Reporting directly to the CFO, this role owns financial planning, liquidity management, operational modeling, M&A underwriting, decision-support analytics, and supporting reporting across our portfolio of locations.

Operating within a lean FP&A organization, this position requires high-level strategic acumen combined with an agile, "roll-up-your-sleeves" operational mindset. Working in partnership with the CFO, CEO, COO, and Controller, the ideal candidate will optimize unit-level economics, drive business performance, leverage responsible AI and modern tech, and support scale through organic growth and acquisitions.

This is a remote position with preference for candidates based on the West Coast.

    • Planning & Driver-Based Modeling: Lead annual budgeting and rolling forecasts across all locations; build driver-based models for core veterinary metrics (doctor productivity, same-store growth, labor optimization).
    • Agile Decision Support: Deliver sensitivity models, "what-if" scenarios, and risk mitigation strategies to empower fast, data-driven operational decisions.
  • M&A Modeling & Post-Merger Integration
    • Deal Modeling & Valuation: Own financial modeling, transaction analysis, and underwriting for prospective practice acquisitions.
    • Post-Merger Integration: Partner with accounting and field operations to integrate new acquisitions, track post-deal synergies, and establish baseline unit economics.

  • Innovation, Responsible AI & Operations
    • Responsible AI & Automation: Evaluate and adopt responsible AI tools and automated workflows to accelerate predictive modeling and streamline lean FP&A processes.
    • Accounting & Field Alignment: Collaborate closely with the Controller on monthly closes and variance analysis, while partnering with field leaders to align practice operations with financial targets.

Education & Experience

  • Experience: 8–10+ years (Director) or 10–12+ years (Senior Director) of progressive FP&A or strategic finance experience within lean, fast-paced teams.
