Senior Accounting Manager
Location: San Diego, California (Onsite)

Reports to: VP Finance
About the Role
We are seeking a Senior Accounting Manager with a strong public accounting foundation, including Big 4 experience, and 3–5 years of experience in biotechnology, life sciences, or medical device accounting. This role will lead key aspects of the monthly and year‑end close, technical accounting, financial reporting, internal controls/SOX readiness, and finance operations in a fast‑paced, high‑growth medtech environment. The ideal candidate combines strong technical expertise with operational rigor and the ability to partner cross‑functionally across finance, R&D, clinical, HR, legal, and corporate functions.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the monthly, quarterly, and year‑end close processes to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.
- Oversee preparation and review of journal entries, account reconciliations, flux analyses, and supporting schedules.
- Own accounting for key areas such as accruals, prepaids, equity, leases, fixed assets, intercompany, and payroll‑related accounting entries (excluding day‑to‑day payroll operations).
- Support preparation of GAAP financial statements and related disclosures.
- Research, document, and implement conclusions on technical accounting matters, including stock‑based compensation, lease accounting, and complex transactions.
- Lead the company’s internal controls and SOX readiness program, including documentation, control testing coordination, remediation tracking, and accounting policy development, with oversight from the VP Finance and HR.
- Partner with external auditors and internal stakeholders to support annual audit requests and related deliverables; no quarterly auditor reviews are currently conducted.
- Collaborate with FP&A, Legal, HR, and operational teams to ensure accurate treatment of transactions and alignment across functions.
- Oversee key finance operations in San Diego, including p‑card administration, 401(k) processing support, tax coordination/filings, and other administrative accounting activities.
- Drive continuous improvement in accounting processes, systems, and controls to support company growth and scalability.
- Mentor and develop accounting staff, as applicable.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA strongly preferred.
- Big 4 public accounting experience required.
- 3–5 years of accounting experience in biotech, life sciences, medical device, or pharmaceutical industries required.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, internal controls, and financial reporting.
- Experience with technical accounting research and memo preparation.
- Experience in a public company and/or pre‑commercial biotech or medical device environment preferred.
- Experience with ERP systems such as NetSuite, Oracle, or SAP.
- Advanced Excel skills and strong analytical capabilities.
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work independently in a dynamic environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting clinical‑stage or commercial‑stage biotech or medical device companies.
- Exposure to equity accounting, collaboration agreements, and R&D accruals.
- Experience designing, documenting, and improving internal controls and accounting processes in a growing organization.

Compensation
The base salary range for this role is $140,000 – $160,000 depending on experience, skills, and qualifications.
In addition to base salary, this role may be eligible for discretionary bonuses and/or equity grants, subject to board approval and company policy.
